Hello! Aug 03

Hello, my name is Erin and I’m addicted to breakfast.

Or is it carbs?

Lately I seem to spend half my morning daydreaming about what kind of bagel, muffin or danish the kid and I will be going out to get, and if the location with that item also makes an acceptable iced coffee beverage.

When I’m too hungry to go out, or my sensibilities get the better of me, I eat fried eggs with toast at home. I also have several acceptable options for iced coffee in addition to my Keurig.

When I go out, it’s possible to find me at Panera, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Dunkin’ Donuts, or even Publix in search of breakfast.

Panera offers some fabulous quiches, and the kid and I are both big fans of the Strawberries n Cream Scones and the Cinnamon Crunch bagel. They also have a pretty decent Iced Caramel Latte as well, although it is made with a slightly bold, slightly bitter coffee.

Einstein Bros. Bagels is THE place to go for a bagel, imho. The multigrain, cranberry, and dutch apple are all fabulous, and so are the cinnamon sugar Bagel Poppers. Whether you prefer sweet or savory, you will find a bagel to meet your needs. And if the thought of a bagel isn’t doing it for you? They also offer a few muffins and danishes that all look good as well. One day I’ll try them, but for now I’m stuck on the bagels. πŸ˜‰ They do offer an Iced Caramel Macchiato, but there’s never enough caramel to suit my sweet tooth.

Dunkin’ Donuts has THE best iced latte around, and I think a lot of that has to do with their terrific bold coffee and the ton of fat and sugar that I’m sure are used in preparation. Some days, I just don’t care and try to do some extra walking to make up for the increased calorie intake. It is that good. DD also makes some great donuts, my favorites are always the filled kind! But the main reason I’m at DD these days is for the Iced Caramel Latte.

Publix is the local supermarket and my favorite place to shop, but not always for a quick breakfast, since there’s no drive-thru and very limited seating in the deli/bakery area. However, they do make a fantastic apple fritter and… I’m blanking on the name, I think it’s called a Toffee Apple Crunch, which is a flaky danish/croissant topped with apples and toffee glaze.

By now, I’m sure a few people have noticed that I “left out” the most obvious choice for on-the-go breakfast in Starbucks. However, I stated at the beginning of this ever lengthening post that I was looking for breakfast with an acceptable iced coffee beverage. Unfortunately, Starbucks doesn’t really provide this for me. Their drinks are always made/mixed well, but the coffee is too bold and acidic for me to drink with my acid reflux. So I patiently wait every year for the cooler nights of fall and cooler days of winter to enjoy my favorite Starbucks hot beverages – the Caramel Apple Spice and Caramel Brulee Latte (although I’m also a fan of the Gingerbread Latte and the Peppermint Mocha ;)). Also, while all of the baked goods available are quite tasty, the only ones that even begin to fill me up are the oatmeal, Banana Chocolate Chip bread or any of their fall pumpkin options. I’m hungry within 2 hours otherwise, and there are just too many calories in those baked goods to justify them.

Those are my favorite quick breakfast foods, what are yours??

5QF Jul 21

I’m using 5 Question Friday with Mama M as my 5 minutes of relaxing time before I go back to frantically packing up the odds and ends lying around the house before our new carpet installation tomorrow morning. Yes, that sentence is indicative of my current state of mind.

On to the show…

1. If your husband had the BIG V and you got pregnant what would your first reaction be? For the dudes, what would your first reaction be if your wife told you she was pregnant after the Big V?
Oh, Lord, isn’t that why we had this done? Isn’t that just our luck? And then I’d start wishing and dreaming for another girl. And learn to chart. πŸ˜‰

2. Best memory about this summer so far.
Our weekend at Disney last month. I’m still SO PROUD of my daughter. πŸ˜€

3. How often do you change your sheets? Your kids sheets?
Our sheets gets changed roughly every other week. My daughter’s sheets get changed at least twice per week because occasionally she can still pee through her diaper.

4. Having just gone through TSA, would you rather have a full-body scan or a pat-down?
Scan. You can look, but don’t touch!

5. Since it is fair time…what’s your favorite fair (county or state) memory?
This might sound odd, but I don’t live near a fair. The Central Florida Fair would be a 45 minute drive if it were going on, and after going to the Ohio State Fair when I was real young, none of the other “fairs” put on at the schools really rate. I do, however, love fresh made cotton candy. So, that’s my memory, fresh made cotton candy.

Yep, It’s Friday! Jun 24

Go see Mama M to link up with the fun!

1. What is your current favorite tv show?
Bones is the only show I watch with any regularity. I’m also a big fan of Dancing with the Stars and Glee, although I am REALLY behind on Glee…

2. What’s the worst haircut you ever got?
I don’t know that I’ve ever had a terrible cut. I have super fine, super straight hair and am so afraid of hating a style that I keep my hair pretty simple. As in, boring. πŸ˜‰

3. What was something that you did as a child that you thought you were so cool for doing?
Air guitar. *rolls eyes*

4. Do you have any GREAT frugal family fun tips?
Ummm… My daughter and I love story time at the library, and over the summer they often have extra activities. I also know that the city where we live has a local musician perform in the field across from city hall once a month. And a nearby city has nightly activities on the lake.

5. Would you drive across country if you had the money to fly?
If we had the time, yes. I’m not a fan of flying, and only do it when I have to be somewhere and back in a short amount of time. We’ve already done the drive from FL to NY, and recently discussed a road trip to the Grand Canyon, although it will still be a couple years before we can actually do it.

A Post Inspired by 5QF Jun 09

I’m sure you’re all surprised to see me post for 5QF again. Not. There are a ton of small things going on around here and it doesn’t leave a ton of time to blog. I do have a couple posts in the works though, so maybe I can get some things posted in the next week or so.

Anyway, to play along, link up with Mama M.

1. How close to your childhood dreams is your life now?
This is difficult. As a child, I wanted to be everything, including a SAHM like I am. Usually though, my dreams involved something in the medical profession. I might get there once the babes get into “real” school. We’ll see. πŸ™‚

2. What is one must have item for the summer?

3. Do you have your kids stay up on school stuff during summer vacation? (Or, if you don’t have kiddos, did your parents make you keep up on school stuff during summer?)
My daughter’s only 2, so she’s ALWAYS learning. I try to avoid workbooks for this age, and just try to expose her to life. This has become even more difficult than usual, because on top of my usual introverted issues, the pregnancy gets in the way as well.

My mom never made us keep up on school stuff over summer. She thought my brother and I were both crazy when we voluntarily took summer school (both of us the summer before our junior years). When we were real young, like K-2nd, she always made sure she knew our strengths and weaknesses from the previous year, so she could help us remember right before the next year started. Just a little refresher before the new year started. πŸ™‚

4. Do you can or freeze fresh produce?
No. I wouldn’t mind learning how, but it’s not a big thing for me right now.

5. Do you get ready for the day first thing in the morning?
No. I hate mornings. If I need to be somewhere before 11am, I put everything together the night before. If plans are after 11, I might wait and get ready in the morning. If no plans turn into plans, it all depends on how much prep it will take me in order to get ready. πŸ˜‰ I’ve become a pro at prepping for activities though, so it usually doesn’t take too long to leave once I’ve put my mind to it!

Pregnancy Update May 22

I’ve seen a couple other bloggers do this (most recently Joanna) and thought I’d give it a whirl. I’m always looking for inspiration for posts so that they might be interesting to read. πŸ˜‰

18 Weeks

*How far along?: 18 weeks

*Total weight gain: Approximately 3 pounds. Don’t be jealous, I gained a ton of weight at the end of my first pregnancy. My time will come.

*How big is baby?: Sweet Potato (Average size: 5.6 in, 6.7 oz)

*Sleep?: I find myself waking every couple hours for no apparent reason. No extra bathroom trips so far.

*Best moment this week?: The fabulous morning I had with my daughter on Thursday. I baked blueberry muffins, which she loved, and she amused herself while I did a few chores. She’d always been very independent – until I got pregnant. πŸ˜‰

*Movement?: I’m starting to feel like the baby is a fish and I’m the fish bowl. Whenever I’m still I can feel flutters.

*Food cravings?: None now. First trimester it was potatoes.

*Labor signs?: No, thankfully.

*Belly button in or out?: In

*What I miss: The energy and ease of movement I had before I got pregnant. I really didn’t realize how good it had gotten until it was gone.

*What I’m looking forward to: My gender ultrasound on Wednesday!!!

The Usual 5QF May 19

If you don’t know the drill, visit Mama M for details…

1. Do you and your spouse go to bed at the same time?
Rarely. He likes being the first to arrive at work because then he can get actual work done before others arrive, so he’s usually in bed by 10. I only need 8 hours of sleep and my daughter sleeps until at least 8am, so I go to bed somewhere around midnight.

2. A question for the ladies…What kind of facial hair do you like on your man?
None, or where it’s *just* long enough to not be scratchy.

3. What’s the worst vacation you’ve ever taken?
I’ve never had a horrible vacation. *knocks on wood* The closest thing to a bad vacation I can recall was the last few weeks leading up to my first cruise. My anxiety issues had come out in force, and there were days I wanted to do nothing but sleep. But I pushed through, and my anxiety issues have been improving ever since.

4. What’s the first-ever blog you followed?
Ummm… I’m not sure. Both my husband and a real life friend had blogs when I started, so I’m sure they were up there. And I know I borrowed a lot of their favorites to follow at first.

5. Do you enjoy amusement parks?
I LOVE amusement parks! I’ve been a passholder at both Universal and Disney despite a serious dislike of roller coasters. You just can’t beat the atmosphere, the sights, and the junk food! πŸ˜‰

5QF to Inspire Some Blogging May 13

Look! A post! I do remember my blog. πŸ˜‰ A quick update before the main event. Shortly after my last post my husband and I both had a serious allergy attack or cold and spent the next several days bordering on miserable. Other than a slight bit of stuffiness, our daughter seemed to come through unaffected. Until yesterday when she started with this odd cough. Since today is Friday and I believe doctors go to school longer to become pediatricians for a reason, I decided to go ahead and take my daughter in. She was the happiest kid in the sick waiting room, bouncing around and happily munching on raisins. Then she was taken back and they took her temperature. 100 degrees. Wait, what? My kid has a low grade fever? When did THAT happen? So we proceeded through the exam and found out that she has a sinus infection and will need antibiotics for the next few days. The cough is actually starting to bug her now, but I think it will clear quickly.

Trust your instincts people.

Now, on to the main event. If you’re interested in learning more about 5QF with Mama M, click here.

1. Tube socks, calf socks, crew, ankle, none? ([email protected]_Blog)
Ankle socks, although I very very rarely ever wear socks. Living in Florida and being a SAHM, I can spend most or the year in flipflops or casual flats. I only need socks for camping/hiking and going to the gym. πŸ™‚

2. Was your child’s (children’s) name a mutual decision or was it a debate? If you don’t have children, do you plan on giving your spouse a say, or do you have a name you MUST have, regardless if your other half likes it or not?! (From @momtodh)
Neither one of us had a name we HAD to have, although there were a few we could agree NOT to have. Our first child’s name was a mutual decision, although I did insist on a more unique spelling. We don’t yet know the gender of our second child, but do have one name picked out already as a possibility.

3. What is your favorite type of weather? ([email protected])
I like it warm enough during the day to hit the beach (mid-70s?) but cool enough at night for a light jacket and a fire outside in the fire pit (upper 50s?). This roughly translates to spring and fall in Florida, and both are very very short.

4. If left to your own devices, what time would you wake up every day? (From Sandy at “Pardon My Dust”)
If I wake up any later than 9:30, I feel like I’m wasting the day. Occasionally we’ll be up really late and sleep past that point, but since the birth of our first child, these instances have become increasingly rare.

5. Have you bought your cemetery plots yet? (From Pam at “Troop Petrie”)
No. We’ve only just begun writing wills and that’s been a difficult step for us. We’re still young enough to think we’re invincible (even when we know we’re not), but a plan has to be in place for our kids if something does happen.

Ultimate Blog Party ’11 Apr 01

Ultimate Blog Party 2011

Welcome fellow party goers! Pull up a chair and have a snack!

Beverages are self-serve from the fridge, please help yourself. πŸ˜‰

My name is Erin and this is my little corner of the internet. I usually write about things that I’d like answers to, encouragement for, or my response to β€œhot topics” from Twitter, so I post infrequently. The one exception being 5 Question Friday with Mama M, which I seem to always be participating in!

This year, I’ve participated in Top Ten Tuesdays with Sluiter Nation (twice!), professed my love for Keurig, and asked questions about my 2 year old daughter’s changes in behavior. I also recently made a big announcement which was followed by a confession… πŸ˜‰

Feel free to click around and make yourself at home. I’ll be perched on a bar stool with a diet root beer dreaming of all the fun prizes to be won… πŸ˜€

Ah, Friday… Mar 31

Link up with Mama M for 5QF!

1. Have you ever had surgery?
Yes, twice. I had hernia surgery when I was very young, and a c-section to deliver my daughter. This will probably increase to 3 surgeries when baby #2 joins us in October.

2. Ever ride in an ambulance?
No, and I hope to keep it that way.

3. How are you in a medical emergency? Panicked? Calm?
Calm. I used to be a student athletic trainer in high school and the #1 lesson we were taught is that, as a first responder, you CANNOT increase the anxiety of a situation. By doing so you can create panic and cause more injuries or make it more difficult to get help to the person(s) who really need it.

4. Do you have a garden? Flowers or veggies?
It’s been quite awhile since I had a real garden, but we do grow herbs in containers on the back patio and this year I’m attempting tomatoes out there as well.

5. When did you move out of your parents house?
Memorial Day weekend 2004 was the official move, although it had been at least a year since I had REALLY lived there. Long story short, my husband (then fiancee), had just moved into his first apartment without a roommate so we lived together and planned the wedding for the next spring.

The Friday Usual Mar 17

Another round of 5QF with Mama M this week. I promise, there will be more entertaining posts in the near future, but I’ve been a little busy lately getting myself together. So for now, just the questions and their answers. πŸ™‚

1. Have you ever testified in court? For what?
Negative. And if I ever do, I hope to be an expert witness for something.

2. Do you still have your wedding dress?
Yes, altho I haven’t seen it in several months since it got shoved to the back of a different closet. I’ll keep it until there just isn’t any space any where for it.

3. Is there a special place you like to go when you’re happy, sad, stressed, etc.?
Not particularly. The more “negative” emotions usually involve more reading and getting caught up in other people’s problems and not focusing on my own. The more “positive” emotions tend to play out in various video games. This is not a rule, per se, because I’ve also been known to fire up the Wii
for some Sports ResortSword Play on days I’m feeling violent. It also makes my daughter giggle. πŸ˜‰

4. If you have kids, do they sleep with you? If you don’t have kids…will you let your kids sleep with you when/if you have them?
My daughter does not sleep with me. As a rule, I don’t intend to ever let her sleep with me. Sure an occasion such as a nightmare or sickness might warrant some night time with mommy, but the average nights? No. Because I am SO HAPPY that there is ONE place in my house that isn’t constantly rearranged by my toddler, and that’s my bedroom. Just thinking about it makes me want to go curl up in bed without even bothering to finish this post…

5. Do you watch late night TV?
Define late night. You could find me watching TV any time from 7am to 2am, but it is usually kid’s shows or my shows on the DVR. Oh, and now it could also be movies or documentaries on Netflix. I’m not really into the late night talk shows, although I do have a soft spot for David Letterman and Conan O’Brien.
